The Klondike River Lodge near Dawson City, Yukon, has burned down.
Firefighters from Dawson City, which is about 40 kilometres north of the lodge, were called to the scene of the fire at about 8 a.m. local time December 30th. When they arrived, the building had burned to the ground.
Jim Regimbal, the Dawson City fire chief, said they couldn't do much but try to contain the blaze.
"You're not looking at putting the fire out. You're looking at just surrounding the building and ensuring that the other buildings surrounding don't catch fire and just positioning yourself far enough away just in case there are some propane bottles or other hazardous materials that may explode inside the building and injure the first responders," he said.The lodge has been boarded up and not in use for months.
Fire officials do not know if the building still had power.
They are treating the fire as suspicious, and a full investigation starts today.
