The Deh Cho First Nation is considering taking out a loan as the federal government is cutting 10 per cent of the First Nation’s core funding.
Chiefs from across the Deh Cho region of the Northwest Territories are gathering in Hay River this week.
The Deh Cho leadership is talking about issues ranging from the water strategy, to the Deh Cho land claim negotiation process.
The leadership is also looking at ways to fill the funding gap when there is less money to pay for salaries, band offices and services.
One idea is to take out a loan.
Chief Wayne Sabourin, the chief of the Deh Gah Got'ie First Nation, said he will have to ask his membership what they think of the idea.
"I don't like the fact, but if it's going to have to go there then... we're going to have to swallow it somehow," he said.
Grand Chief Herb Norwegian said borrowing money is a contentious issue.
"If we're going to go down that road, then we need to know what the conditions are and how that's going to affect negotiations."
The funding cuts are set to kick in in 2014.
