Wolves have killed one family dog and injured another near Hay River, N.W.T.
Daniel Patterson said wolves hauled away one of the family dogs six weeks ago from the homestead 24 kilometres from Hay River.
Patterson said they tried to take another last Saturday.
"They got a hold of her and chewed her up pretty good,” he said. “My 85-year-old mother heard it and went out and screamed and hollered, and they let her go, but the dog lost a lot of blood and is in pretty rough shape right now."
Patterson said that wolf has been close by, waiting for another chance at the dog.
Wolves were also spotted in a Yellowknife subdivision this week.
Kristan Leggett saw two wolves in the Niven Lake neighbourhood.
“There was a wolf standing right there, kind of looking like he didn't really know what to do, and his friend was in the children's park,” she said.
Leggett, who arrived in the North less than four months ago, snapped photos through her car window with her phone.
“I was really excited to come to Yellowknife because of the wilderness, so as soon as I saw the wolf I decided I'm not a Yellowknifer, I'm a Yellowlifer,” she said.
