“They have not only taken it upon themselves to wear purple, which was the student’s favorite colour but also to create a shrine near his locker, to sign banners, to post pictures…to hug one another when the emotions come rolling up again,” said volleyball coach Eric Church.

The 18-year-old was a volleyball player and competitor in Arctic sports. He had graduated from high school last year, but returned this year to upgrade for a better chance at post-secondary education.

Jo-Ellen Lyslo, a full-time counsellor at the school, said students are expressing their grief.

"They made a huge message board, where they left condolences to the family," she said. "The way they supported each other was just such an encouragement to see."

An autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday in Edmonton.
