Yukon proposes to make carbon monoxide detectors mandatory
Proposed legislation comes after five people died in rented house in January

The Yukon government is proposing to make carbon monoxide detectors mandatory in all Yukon homes, including rental units.
That was one of two changes the government says it is moving forward on following the establishment of a working group on oil burning appliance safety and input from meetings in all Yukon communities.
“We have chosen to move forward on two specific recommendations and one is requiring that all building permits for all modifications and installations, when it comes to oil-fired appliances, that those be taken out by certified journeyperson oil burner mechanics,” said Elaine Taylor, minister of Community Services.
The proposed legislation comes after five people died from carbon monoxide poisoning in a Whitehorse home in January.
Yukon's chief coroner has called an inquest into their deaths, but a date has not been set yet.
