The sentencing for an Iqaluit teenager involved in a violent break and enter in the city has been postponed for at least a month.
In 2010, the young man and two others entered a home with a machete. He sexually assaulted a woman while her young child was sleeping.
The teen, who was 17 at the time the crime was committed, can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The teen had pleaded guilty and his sentencing hearing began Tuesday. But the hearing was adjourned Wednesday afternoon because his defence lawyer has pneumonia.
A new court date will be set on Nov. 5.
Justice Neil Sharkey said the court is tight for time but he hopes the sentencing will conclude in November.
At that time he will have to decide whether the teenager will be sentenced as a youth or an adult. The crown is seeking an adult sentence because of the seriousness of the crime.
