A 10-year-old Yukon boy is in a Vancouver hospital in stable condition after a rifle was discharged in a house on Thanksgiving Sunday.

RCMP Sgt. Don Rogers said the family was preparing to go hunting from their home along the Annie Lake Road near Whitehorse.

He said a number of firearms were present and adults there were drinking alcohol.

A man picked up a rifle and it was discharged inside the home, grazing the boy in the abdomen and striking his left arm, causing severe damage.

Rogers said the family administered first aid and drove the boy to the Mount Lorne Community Centre, where they called an ambulance.

The boy was medevaced to the Vancouver Children's Hospital where he underwent surgery.

Whitehorse General Hospital spokesperson Val Pike says the boy is in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.

A 68-year old relative has been charged with careless use of a firearm and criminal negligence causing bodily harm. He has been released on his own recognizance.
