A couple in Inuvik, N.W.T., was convicted Friday for attacking a man with a knife and then threatening to kill him.
The victim was slashed with a knife behind his ear, requiring seven stitches. The man said it could have been much worse — he said he managed to block the knife and wrestle it away from his attacker.
The victim told court that the couple later threatened to kill him, all because he was accused of talking to police about who in town was selling marijuana.
The case included hours of questioning by lawyers from both sides.
The couple had an entirely different version of the story. They said they acted in self-defence and said they had no ties to drug dealers. They claimed it was the victim who was selling drugs, and started threatening them with a knife during a drug deal.
They also said the cut came from a plastic broom instead of a knife.
In the end, the judge believed the victim.
Marsha Cockney will serve two months in jail for uttering threats.
Dennis Rodgers was found guilty of assault with a weapon and carrying a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He will be sentenced at a later date.
