The Yukon government has opened consultation on a new Condominium Act.

The head of the Whitehorse Condominium Association said the act, which is 35 years old, needs to be updated.

Sonny Gray said a new act may help young people understand what they are buying and the responsibilities which come with the purchase.

“You're in your mid-twenties, and you're buying your first place, next thing you know you're being told how to live in your own home, and that's why you're moving out of your parents place, by the way, so you wouldn't have someone tell you what to do. They're not really ready for that, they're kind of freaking out, like ‘hey, you're not my landlord, I just paid good money for this place so why is it that I have to conform exactly’,” said Gray.

Gray added that there are also unclear areas in the act which need to be improved.

He said contingency funds should be mandatory to deal with major repairs like replacing a roof or re-paving a parking lot.

A consultation meeting will be held next week in Whitehorse. Comments can also be made by email to the Yukon government.
