Two men who held up a cab driver in Yellowknife last December will spend time in jail.
Brent Michael and Sean Qitsualik both admitted that on Dec. 3, 2011 they called a taxi to the Reddi Mart on Byrne Road and Michael held a stick to the cab driver’s ribs and demanded cash.
The judge sentenced the pair on Wednesday to two different sentences. After being given credit for time served, Michael will spend 23 months behind bars, and then serve two years probation. Qitsualik faces 20 months in jail and one year probation.
On Monday, their lawyers had asked the judge for a sentence of 14 to 16 months.
In handing down the sentences, the judge made a number of references to the vulnerability of cab drivers due to the nature of their work.
Both men were charged with holding up a second cab that night but the Crown withdrew those charges.
