The ship, owned by Nunavut Eastern Arctic Shipping, anchored in Quebec waters near Newfoundland and Labrador because of poor weather and could not go to port.

RCMP B Division in Newfoundland and Labrador responded.

"Our members were able to get on the vessel and basically conduct the investigation of the scene as well as interview the crew members on board the vessel," said Sgt. Marc Coulombe.

Police would not say whether they suspect foul play.

The man’s body was taken to St. John's for an autopsy.

"The captain and the crew are co-operating fully and assisting the RCMP at this time with their investigation and our condolences go out to the family," said Suzanne Paquin, president and chief administrative officer of NEAS.

She said the third and final sailing of the Umiavut will not be delayed due to the crew member's death. The Umiavut will leave Valleyfield, Que., on Sept. 21, and is scheduled to arrive in Pangnirtung on Oct. 3, Iqaluit on Oct. 5 and Sanikiluaq on Oct. 13.
