Nunavut government workers voted 72 per cent in favour of ratifying a new collective agreement.

The employees had been voting for a couple of weeks in all of the communities on whether to ratify the deal, which was reached by the Nunavut Employees Union and the Government of Nunavut.

Doug Workman, president of Nunavut Employees Union, said the new contract gives members some assurances, but there's a long way to go.

“You know this employer, this Government of Nunavut, likes to contract public services out and pay people lots of money. Going south seems to be no problem but for those of us who are committed to the public service we don't get very much,” said Workman.

The union was also able to negotiate pay raises for each year.

More than 2,700 government employees are members of the union.

Their last collective agreement expired in September of 2010. The new agreement will be in place until 2014.
