Iqaluit man charged after early morning hostage-taking
Man was holding knives to woman’s throat when RCMP managed to disarm and detain him

An Iqaluit man faces several charges after taking a woman hostage and threatening to kill her early Wednesday morning.
The RCMP got a call about a possible domestic assault at about 1:30 a.m. local time Wednesday. When they got there, they heard screams from inside. They went inside and found a man restraining a woman and holding several knives to her throat.
According to police, the man said he would kill the woman and also asked police to kill him.
After unsuccessful attempts to negotiate, one of the officers noticed the knives were butter knives and used physical force to disarm the man.
Police say an “intense altercation” ensued but they were able to restrain the man. The RCMP added that the man was heavily under the influence of alcohol.
The woman was not physically injured.
RCMP Supt. Hilton Smee commended the officers for their actions in what he called a “highly volatile situation”.
In the wake of the incident, Adamee Mitsima, 31, faces charges of hostage taking, forcible confinement, assault with a weapon, utter threats to cause death, resist police officer and fail to comply with an undertaking.
