About 6,300 litres of gasoline was flown into Repulse Bay, Nunavut, Friday morning to alleviate a gas shortage in the community.
The community is running low on gas while a fuel tanker that's coming to fill up the community's tanks has been delayed by ice in the bay.
Two more shipments of gas were expected to arrive by air from Rankin Inlet around noon ET.
John Kaufmann, general manager of the Naujat Co-op, said the fuel should last until the tanker arrives on Sept. 11.
Kaufmann said there is about 10,000 to 12,000 litres of gas left in the bottom of the tanks below the line of where it could be pumped, but a special nozzle that was ordered to siphon it out didn't work.
He said Repulse Bay is a fast-growing community and a lot of construction may have led to the gas shortage. Last year Repulse Bay received 500,000 litres of gas. This year, they're expecting 600,000 litres.
