Iqaluit ratepayers will vote on whether the city can borrow 40-million dollars for a new aquatic centre.

The referendum question will be on the ballot in the October 15 municipal election. Councillor Romeyn Stevenson tabled the motion at Tuesday night’s council meeting.

“So I would like to move that council direct administration to prepare for a referendum vote regarding borrowing funds for a new aquatics centre,” Stevenson said.

The new pool facility would include a waterslide, whirlpool and sauna, fitness centre, elders room and a food and beverage kiosk.

The city's lease on the Astro Hill pool expires in March. A "yes" vote on the ballot would be in favour of the new pool and borrowing the money.

Voting no would mean the city would have to look at a lease-to-own arrangement for the project. The city says more information on the referendum and the project will be mailed out in early September.
