The Yukon Housing Corporation is offering a flood relief assistance package to residents of Upper Liard whose homes were damaged in June.

The $3.5 million assistance package will be presented to residents next week.

Thirteen homes were damaged by the flood, including some government infrastructure.

Minister Scott Kent said homes on the east side of the river were virtually destroyed and the Yukon government is offering to buy 11 properties there.

“What the assistance package will include is value of the home and property based on depreciated pre-flood appraisals, value of the residential chattel losses, as well as allowance for some of the non-residential improvements,” he said.

Kent said the government will complete the environmental remediation of the area and deem it as flood prone and not suitable for occupancy.
