Nunavut Justice Minister urges gun safety
Message comes after several gun-related incidents in the last month

Nunavut's Justice Minister Daniel Shewchuk is urging Nunavut residents to make sure firearms are stored and safely secured.
Shewchuk issued a written statement Monday in response to the recent gun violence in the territory.
Nunavut Justice Minister Daniel Shewcuk issued a written statement Monday addressing recent gun-related incidents in the territory. (CBC)Three separate firearms-related incidents happened within the last month - in Kimmirut, Igloolik and Hall Beach.
Shewchuk said he's deeply disturbed by what's happened. He said the Nunavut Government will work with the communities to take steps to stop violence in the future.
In his statement, Shewchuk also encourages people to get to know the RCMP members in their communities and to support them in keeping their communities safe.
In Kimmirut last month, shots were fired at the local RCMP detachment, and in Igloolik last week, a gunman allegedly threatened to kill police there.
Charges have been laid in both of those incidents.
Last week, RCMP Chief Supt. Steve McVarnock urged Nunavut leaders to do more to address issues of violence and mental health.
