Nunavut's Integrity Commissioner has been given more time to investigate the conduct of Fred Schell, the member of the legislative assembly for South Baffin.

Norman Pickell's review was due this month but he now has until October to finish.

Pickell requested more time for the review. He did not say why, but said his reasons would be explained in the final report presented to the legislature.

The review follows Premier Eva Aariak's decision earlier this year to strip Schell of his ministerial portfolios. She alleged Schell had abused his authority as a cabinet minister.

At the time of his demotion, Schell was the Minister responsible for Human Resources, and the Minister responsible for the Nunavut Housing Corporation.

Aariak has not explained what Schell is alleged to have done. She only said at the time that she was "disappointed" and "disheartened".

Schell has also been tight-lipped about the investigation.

This is not the first time Schell has been subject of an ethics investigation. Last year, the Integrity Commissionerfound Schell had violated the Nunavut Integrity Act by using his position as an MLA for personal gain.
