A search is underway for two adults and six children travelling in a freighter canoe off Nunavik in northern Quebec.
Lt. Edward Stansfield of the Canadian Forces Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax said the seven-metre boat was travelling between Kangiqsualujjuaq in the southeast corner of Ungava Bay to Tasiujaq in the southwest.
He said the boat was due to arrive Sunday or Monday, but weather conditions were poor, with rain, fog and winds reaching 40 km/h.
“It’s expected, and certainly hoped, that they just went ashore to wait out the bad weather, which I believe has improved since. But nevertheless, they are overdue by a significant amount of time.”
He said a locally operated Twin Otter airplane was sent out to search the area Tuesday afternoon and CFB Greenwood in Nova Scotia dispatched a Hercules search plane to the area. It was expected to arrive around 7:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
Stansfield said a Cormorant helicopter is also scheduled to fly from CFB Greenwood first thing Wednesday morning and the coast guard ship Des Groseilliers is sailing to Ungava Bay and expected to arrive sometime on Wednesday.
