New health statistics show Nunavut has the lowest rates of caesarian sections in Canada.

One in 10 babies are born by C-section in the territory, about half the national average. Nunavut also has the lowest rate of epidural use.

The numbers are part of a new report from the Canadian Institute for Health Information.

Iqaluit mom Martine Dupont said the numbers reflect the Nunavut health care system’s approach to childbirth.

"I think they listen a little more maybe about what the culture is and what traditional values are,” she said. “It was more just in a relaxed way, natural way, like you do on your own, you are capable of doing this."

The Northwest Territories and the Yukon were also on the low end for C-section rates across Canada — at about 15 per cent for first-time moms.

In general, rates for C-sections are higher for women over the age of 35.
