The City of Yellowknife is warning the public about a text messaging scam. Some residents have received messages requesting payment on outstanding bills.

Mayor Gordon Van Tighem said the scam artists claim to be collecting overdue fines such as speeding or parking tickets.

The text messages include a phone number with an access code where a payment can be made.

Van Tighem said the city does not send text messages requesting payments.

Unpaid tickets can only be paid in person, online or by calling the city's phone payment system.

Residents who receive similar texts should call the city’s Municipal Enforcement Division or the RCMP, Van Tighem said.
