A six-year-old girl died Monday after a playground accident in Kugluktuk, Nunavut.
Police say the girl’s clothing got caught on the hook of a bungee cord that was hanging on some playground equipment.
A five-year-old child she was with at the municipal playground tried to free the girl, but wasn't able to. Police say that child then ran for help.
The victim’s mother and another neighbour came and were able to free the girl.
They brought her to the health centre but police say she was unresponsive.
The death has been ruled accidental.
Kugluktuk Mayor Ernie Bernhardt says the hamlet had no system in place to keep the playgrounds safe and clean but that will likely change.
"We'll get the bylaw to check it year-round, but more so in the summer because that's when all the kids are playing out 24 hours a day, most of them," he said. "So we'll develop a system to ensure that maybe every 20 minutes they can be checked, preventing any kind of accidents."
Bernhardt said the bungee was probably left in the playground by other children.
