The Mae Bachur animal shelter in Whitehorse is over capacity after it took in 10 emaciated sled dogs this week from Haines Junction.

“We've put a big strain on our resources but we couldn't turn our back," said Shelley Cuthbert of the Yukon Humane Society.

"We're asking the public if anyone is interested in adopting or fostering, please come on down, fill out the application, go through the process. If you're willing to take one of these guys as a foster, that would be great."

Cuthbert said the sled dogs were malnourished and had infections.

“There was a report that came into the vet clinic and the vet clinic notified us and the owner contacted us saying he was willing to surrender the animals as long as we could arrange for transport,” she said.

Cuthbert says because the dogs' owner in Haines Junction surrendered them willingly, his identity will not be revealed. Also, no charges of animal cruelty will be pursued.

A new litter of 11 puppies is also living at the shelter, in addition to all the other dogs. The shelter's web page shows 47 dogs available for adoption, not counting the newly rescued sled dogs.

Cuthbert added some of the shelter's other dogs are being shipped to shelters down south next week, which should take some strain off the current situation.
