Two detectives with the Lethbridge Regional Police Service are in Whitehorse this week to examine the tactics of local police officers.
The Whitehorse RCMP called them in after a Whitehorse woman filed a public complaint against the local RCMP.
Helen Hollywood, 57, alleges that police used excessive force when a Whitehorse RCMP officer handcuffed her downtown two weeks ago.
Hollywood was treated in Vancouver for an arm injury. She was discharged from St. Paul's Hospital earlier today.
Staff Sgt. Ian Sanderson, who is in charge of the investigation, said the Lethbridge police do the investigation because they are completely independent from the Whitehorse RCMP.
“They will speak with all the people involved, all the witnesses and get the victim’s information and document all that information, and provide the case to the public prosecution's office for their determination if there is any merit to the complaint and deal with it as they see fit,” he said.
Sanderson expects the investigation to take several weeks.
“Anticipated timeline is difficult to say, but certainly it will not be within the course of 30 days. It will probably take more than that,” he said.
Sanderson says after the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Crown prosecutor’s office to decide if the issue needs to be dealt with in the courts.
