The MLA for Nahendeh is worried repairs to the Liard Trail will be overlooked again this year.

Last week N.W.T. Premier Bob McLeod said the Prime Minister is so interested in getting the Tuktoyaktuk to Inuvik highway built that he has prepared to raise the territory's borrowing limit to make it happen.

But MLAs decide where the extra money goes.

Nahendeh MLA Kevin Menicoche says it doesn't make sense to build a new highway when an existing N.W.T. road is in such bad shape it's closed for several weeks a year.

“The Liard highway, Highway 7, doesn't seem to be in driving distance of either government's capital plans,” he said.

Highway 7 runs from Checkpoint on Highway 1 between Jean Marie River, N.W.T., and Fort Simpson, N.W.T., through Fort Liard, N.W.T., to Fort Nelson, B.C.

Menicoche said putting money into Highway 7 would pay for itself in the long-run in tourism dollars.

Finance Minister Michael Miltenberger said both roads are priorities and both are on top of the list to get extra money if the borrowing limit increases.
