One of the two people charged in a major drug bust in Yellowknife this week has a high-profile father.
Brittany Beaulieu, 26, is one of the co-accused in the case. Her father is the territory’s Minister of Health and Social Services Tom Beaulieu.
Brittany Beaulieu and Alexander Smith, 33, both face two counts of drug possession with the purpose of trafficking.
The RCMP seized $750,000 worth of marijuana, cocaine and crack cocaine from a Yellowknife residence in January. One police officer described the bust as "unprecedented" in its size.
The minister said the charges came as a surprise to him. He said he doesn’t plan on resigning.
Health Minister Tom Beaulieu's daughter, Brittany Beaulieu, has been charged with possession of marijuana and cocaine for the purposes of trafficking. (CBC)“It’s difficult and I will support my daughter through this thing,” he said. “She did a stupid thing, I don’t believe she’s a drug dealer… I have to support her, she’s my daughter. I see her as an individual that is a kind, warm person who I raised myself.”
He said it’s a family matter, and added that it’s very difficult. He said he doesn’t think it will affect his job. He has come under fire this week in the legislature about the state of addictions treatment in the territory.
Beaulieu has been released until her next court appearance on March 20.
Smith remains in police custody. His next appearance is Feb. 14. Court documents show Smith has a lengthy history of run-ins with the law.
There is currently a publication ban on the proceedings in the bail hearing.
