Two mushers in the Yukon Quest sled dog race have bowed out early after being injured on the trail.

Alaskan musher Mike Ellis slid into some trees Sunday at the bottom of Eagle Summit trail, dislocating his shoulder. He came into the Central checkpoint without feeling in his left hand or arm.

Ellis said, for the sake of his dogs, he thought it was best to scratch.

Rookie musher Jason Weitzel dropped out at the Circle City checkpoint due to injury Monday.

Veteran musher Hugh Neff is leading the race at this point.

Of Yukon's four rookie mushers, Yuka Honda has reached the Slaven’s Roadhouse dog drop, and Maren Bradley, Marcelle Fressineau and Brian Wilmhurst have all left the Circle City checkpoint.
