A 13-year-old Ndilo, N.W.T., girl died in 2010 after taking ecstasy, CBC News has learned.
Savannah Mackenzie was found unresponsive in her home in Ndilo around 3 a.m. on a Saturday morning. She later died in hospital in Edmonton, after she was taken off life support.
Savannah Mackenzie, a 13-year-old girl from Ndilo, N.W.T., died in 2010 after taking ecstasy, CBC News has learned. Her mother, Nora Mackenzie, says her daughter was a young happy girl who hadn't taken drugs before. She didn't know her daughter had taken drugs, she thought she was just out for a movie.
She is urging parents to talk to their children about drugs, and hopes speaking out will help stop another teen from losing their life.
“Make sure you question them. Me, I hardly ever questioned my daughter. What they should start doing is question them. Look in their pockets or whatever.”
The year after Savannah died, another Yellowknife teen was found dead after taking ecstasy, according to his family.
John Bowden sits on the committee for the prevention of youth substance abuse.
“Unless the community decides as a collective entity that they are going to get organized against the organized drug dealers, you don’t have a hope,” he said.
RCMP are warning the public about a type of ecstasy which could be headed to the territory from Alberta and B.C. that has been linked to at least 13 deaths in those provinces in the last six months
It contains a combination of ecstasy with another chemical similar to ecstasy. It takes longer to take effect, so users may take more of the drug.
