Grise Fiord, Nunavut, has a mayor again after several months without anyone in the top job.

Meeka Kiguktak was acclaimed by the hamlet’s council at a meeting last week. No one ran for the position during the Dec. 12 municipal election. Kiguktak was the mayor leading up to the election, but decided not to run again at that time.

“They went around and do nominations and some council accepted, and some did not. But at the end, Meeka remained the mayor for the year, this current year anyway,” said Marty Kuluguqtuq, who was the community’s returning officer for the election.

Lisa Audlaluk Watsko has been appointed as deputy mayor for the community of about 140 people.
