Twenty four mushers depart Fairbanks, Alaska, Saturday at noon PT for this year's Yukon Quest International sled dog race.
The mushers and their dog teams will attempt to race 1,600 kilometres to the finish line in Whitehorse. Each year, the Quest alternates its starting line between the two cities.
The race takes 10 to 16 days, depending on weather and trail conditions. There are four mandatory rest layovers, two four hours, one eight hours and the longest — 36 hours — at the halfway point in Dawson City.
Alaskan musher Allen Moore and his team will be the first on the trail. Moore finished sixth last year. Four-time Quest winner Lance Mackey from Fairbanks will start in the 16th position.
Four Yukoners are competing in the race — all rookies. They are Maren Bradley of Carcross, Brian Wilmhurst of Dawson City, Marcelle Fressineau and Yuka Honda of Whitehorse.
The winning team takes home $35,000.
