Residents of Watson Lake, Yukon, will soon have a new RCMP detachment commander and for the first time, they were given a say in who got the job.
Someone from the community now sits on the selection board and gets a say in who is hired to lead the local detachment.
The new hiring practice comes from one of the recommendations from a recent RCMP review.
May Stewart, of the Liard First Nation, sat on the interview board which ended up selecting Cpl. Cam Lockwood.
RCMP Staff Sgt. Ken Foster said Watson Lake is the first rural community in Yukon to be involved in the new hiring practice.
“Not all communities are equal - they have different dynamics, different challenges, different needs, and it's really a tremendous step in my opinion. Really, at the end of the day, it's that community's chief of police and it's important that they participate in the selection of that individual,” said Foster.
Lockwood's new job is also a promotion - he'll be a sergeant when he assumes his duties there. He'll transfer to Watson Lake soon, leaving his job in Whitehorse as the territory's crime reduction coordinator.
