An 18-year-old in Nunavut convicted of murder has received the most serious youth sentencing option available under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Justice Sue Cooper granted an Intensive Rehabilitative Custody and Supervision order for the teen, who pleaded guilty in September to shooting 27-year old Lucassie Emikotailuk inside the victim’s home in Sanikiluaq last year.
The teen covered the body and put it on top of a sewage tank under the house. The body was found the next day by kids fetching a baseball.
An Intensive Rehabilitative Custody and Supervision order is a territorial and federal agreement where Ottawa provides Nunavut with up to $100,000 a year for treatment for an offender. The order is given to youth offenders with mental health issues convicted of the most serious violent offences.
At the youth's sentencing hearing in September, the crown and defence filed a joint submission asking for a seven-year maximum sentence.
On Friday, Cooper told the young man he has a lot of work ahead of him, as does his family.
The teen will continue to serve a portion of his sentence in Iqaluit at the young offenders' facility. The rest will be served in the community.
Cooper also issued a lifetime firearms prohibition.
