A Dawson City, Yukon, man who was shot by police last week has been charged with attempted murder.

Mark McDiarmid, 32, was wounded when RCMP officers shot him during an incident last Thursday.

McDiarmid remains in stable condition in Whitehorse General Hospital under police guard. He appeared before a judge on Tuesday via telephone.

McDiarmid has been charged with 11 offences, including attempted murder, assault with a weapon and assaulting a police officer.

He also faces several old charges, including assault with a weapon, uttering threats and assaulting a police officer.

The Trondek Hwech'in First Nation, of which McDiarmid is a member, said in a statement Wednesday that it is working with the Council of Yukon First Nations to gain observer status into the shooting investigation.

The investigation is being done by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT).

"We have been in touch with the grand chief and with other individuals from the First Nations communities, and we're working with them to identify a suitable observer to help us in our investigation," said Cliff Purvis, ASIRT's executive director.

"We look forward to that person being identified and to their involvement in the investigation."

Earlier this week, Purvis said the investigation showed that the RCMP officers felt threatened because McDiarmid was allegedly wielding an axe or splitting maul.

The charges have been put over until Nov. 2.

There is no word on when McDiarmid will be released from hospital.
