Two Yukon residents have been charged with attempted murder in connection with Monday's shooting in Haines Junction.

Whitehorse residents Chris Cornell, 29, and Jessica Johnson, 21, were arrested Monday morning following a robbery and a police chase.

Police say Madley's Store was broken into and an employee, Frank Parent, was pepper-sprayed and beaten. The incident happened between 6 and 7 a.m.

RCMP Sgt. Don Rogers said police then came upon a suspicious vehicle and as they began to pursue it north along the Alaska Highway, one or more shots were fired in their direction. At least one bullet struck the RCMP vehicle Rogers said, resulting in non life-threatening injuries to Haines Junction detachment commander Cpl. Kim MacKellar.

"Cpl. MacKellar sustained injuries as a result of the shooting," Rogers said. "He was transported to Whitehorse Hospital for medical treatment and has since been transported to Vancouver for further medical assistance."

Rogers would not say if MacKellar was hit by a bullet or injured in some other way.

Cornell and Johnson face seven charges including attempted murder. Cornell was already wanted by police for possession of stolen property. He faces additional charges for breaching court orders. They'll appear again in court Friday.

The residents of Haines Junction, Yukon, have been shaken by the incident, said the village's chief administrative officer.

"When you have a community such as Haines Junction, which is safe and stable and relatively quiet for the most part, it's very disconcerting when you have an incident like this occur," said Michael Riseborough.

The police are also looking into break and enters in a rural residential subdivision on the Alaska Highway south of Haines Junction. They are not saying if those are related to the robbery in Haines Junction.
