More than one hundred members of the Whitehorse Chamber of Commerce responded to a survey within a day and said they wanted “straight talk” from political candidates this election.

Chamber president Rick Karp said he hoped the enthusiastic level of interest shown in the survey to business owners will also be reflected in the voter numbers and results.

“We can't hold anyone responsible for their actions if we don't get out there and vote,” Karp said. “And I think that is the most important thing right now [is] that everyone who is eligible to vote votes [and] we have to have a really big voter turnout for this election.”

Major election issues raised by the survey were housing, energy, mining, the Peel watershed and infrastructure for telecommunications.

Karp said much of the language in more than 30 pages of comments used too strong a language to republish in the bulletin. However, he said, the response to the survey in general is not entirely surprising.

“I think that people realize that this is a really critical election that we are headed into for the future of Yukon,” he said.
