A woman in Grand Falls, N.L., is facing charges related to a snowmobile crash that killed her common-law husband near Yellowknife last year.

Long Lake, NWT

RCMP in the Northwest Territories announced on Tuesday that they have charged a 54-year-old woman with impaired driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death.

Police would not release the woman's name, citing a new RCMP policy of not naming individuals who have been charged. Court documents identify the woman as Beverley Roberts.

Lewis David Whalen, 63, of Yellowknife died on April 2, 2010, after his snowmobile collided with another snowmobile about 16 kilometres north of Long Lake.

Yellowknife RCMP Const. Kathy Law said the woman, who was Whalen's common-law spouse, no longer lives in the Northwest Territories.

The woman was in Grand Falls when a warrant was issued for her arrest. She turned herself in to RCMP in that community on Tuesday morning, Law said.

"She is still in Grand Falls, Newfoundland. She is in police custody at this time," Law told CBC News.

"When she found out, or became aware, that there was a warrant for her arrest because of this investigation, she did turn herself in."

Law said RCMP officers will travel to Newfoundland and Labrador this week to bring the woman back to Yellowknife for a court appearance scheduled for next week.

The charges were laid 15 months after Whalen's death because a major RCMP investigation was involved, Law said.
