A 17-year-old boy from Sanikiluaq, Nunavut, has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in connection with a shooting in the community last year.

The boy, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, pleaded guilty to the charge Monday before the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit.

According to the RCMP, the boy was 16 years old when he shot a 27-year-old family member.

Police found the deceased person's body on May 2, 2010, and officers charged the youth with murder a week later.

All the facts of the case will be read aloud in court when the boy is sentenced. He is due back in court on June 13.

On Monday, the court ordered a psychiatric assessment that will help lawyers and the judge determine an appropriate sentence.

The assessment will not likely be complete until late this summer. Until then, the boy remains remanded at the Young Offenders' Facility in Iqaluit.

As part of the boy's guilty plea, the Crown said it will not seek an adult sentence in the case.

According to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, someone found guilty of second-degree murder faces a maximum sentence of seven years, which would include some time in custody and some time to be served in the community.
