A 37-year-old woman is alive and safe after being stranded on a Yukon lake, alone in a small boat that was taking on water, for at least two days.
RCMP said they rescued the woman on Monday afternoon, after she was spotted by a pilot who was flying over Lake Laberge, located about 50 kilometres north of Whitehorse.
"It certainly was unusual, but we're happy it came to a happy conclusion," Sgt. Don Rogers told CBC News Tuesday in Whitehorse.
Police would not release the woman's name, nor would they talk about how she got stranded in the boat in the first place.
"The investigation revealed that the woman had been in the boat for at least two days, possibly three," Rogers said.
"She did have warm clothing but was otherwise not equipped to be in the open. The boat had no motor or lifejackets."
The woman was found alone in a small open boat that was butted against some ice on Lake Laberge. The boat was taking on water, Rogers said.
"I've seen pictures of the boat. It certainly wasn't something that I would want to be in [in] open water, let alone water with ice and a current [that is] trapping you in the ice," he said.
Following the rescue, the woman was taken to Whitehorse General Hospital. Police say she is doing fine.
