A problem at a Yukon Energy Corp. substation in Whitehorse shut down power to the entire Whitehorse-Aishihik-Faro hydroelectric grid on Monday, leaving many people in the dark for over an hour.

The power went out at 11:58 a.m. PT and was restored at 12:56 p.m. in downtown Whitehorse. People in Carcross and Teslin waited even longer for the power to be restored at 1:43 p.m.

Yukon Energy spokesperson Janet Patterson said crews re-routed power around the stricken substation, and now they are trying to find the cause of the outage.

"We don't know exactly what the problem is yet because the cause is still under investigation, but we know that that's where the problem originated," Patterson told CBC News on Monday afternoon.

"The crews have now isolated the damaged equipment. They're trying to determine what repairs are necessary, so that work is still underway."

Patterson said the whole Whitehorse-Aishihik-Faro grid was affected, from Teslin to Haines Junction and north to Faro.

Meanwhile, staff and customers at a downtown Whitehorse coffee shop took the power outage in stride.

Java Connection owner Cindy Beasley said they continued on without the power, serving coffee in Thermos containers and selling sandwiches for lunch.

"There's just two of us on the till and a calculator and away we go. And actually, people are really patient," Beasley said.
