Iqaluit RCMP and bylaw officers are trying to find out who took a snowmobile joyride through the city cemetery sometime last week, mowing down 20 crosses as a result.
An incident at the Iqaluit cemetery sometime last week has resulted in 20 crosses being damaged, according to city officials. (CBC) Chief enforcement officer Kevin Sloboda said the the damage appears to have been done on purpose, and therefore it's an act of vandalism.
Sloboda said the city is asking people to check the graves of their loved ones for any damage.
"At this point, we're just trying to get a hold of the people," he said Tuesday.
"We're going to look at the best way of trying to assist people if we can to getting these crosses replaced."
Iqaluit RCMP Sgt. Jimmy Akavak said whoever is found responsible for the damage at the cemetery could be charged with mischief or vandalism.
Anyone with information about what happened is being asked to contact police or the city.
