An Iqaluit nurse has pleaded guilty to sexual assault in connection with an incident at Nunavut's largest hospital last year.
Raymond Labrecque was charged with sexual assault in December, after a woman filed a complaint about an incident that took place at Qikiqtani General Hospital in June. Labrecque pleaded guilty to the charge on Wednesday. (CBC) A lawyer for Raymond Labrecque, 51, entered the plea in the Nunavut Court of Justice on Wednesday. Labrecque was not present at the court hearing.
RCMP charged Labrecque with sexual assault in December, after a woman filed a complaint about an incident in June at Qikiqtani General Hospital in Iqaluit.
Labrecque will be in court on March 21 for sentencing.
Labrecque has been a registered nurse in Nunavut since 2004. Before that, he faced disciplinary action in Quebec for professional misconduct.
That province's nursing regulator, the Order of Nurses of Quebec, found Labrecque guilty in 2002 of professional misconduct — related to sexually inappropriate behaviour with a client — while he was working as a psychiatric nurse.
Labrecque's nursing licence was suspended for two months, and he attended counselling sessions that addressed personal and professional boundaries, according to disciplinary documents obtained by CBC News.
Officials with the Registered Nurses Association of Northwest Territories and Nunavut have said that Labrecque informed them of the Iqaluit sexual assault charge in December.
