City crews work on the ice-slicked streets of Iqaluit on Tuesday. (CBC)Students in Iqaluit have an extra day of holidays on Tuesday, as all schools in the city are closed due to slippery road conditions.
The school closures can be blamed an unusually mild and rainy spell on Nunavut's capital city and other communities on southern Baffin Island.
It was 0 C in Iqaluit as of noon ET Tuesday, when the normal daytime high there should be –22 C, according to Environment Canada.
While schools are closed on Tuesday, other places were expected to open in the afternoon, including Nunavut government offices and the local post office.
Iqaluit city crews suspended municipal services on Tuesday morning but resumed work at 1 p.m. ET. However, staff advised that services may be delayed due to road conditions.
The city advises drivers and pedestrians to use caution and avoid unnecessary travel.
Meanwhile, a number of flights have been cancelled or delayed on Tuesday, including Air Canada Jazz's daily flights in and out of Iqaluit.
Temperatures in Iqaluit have been hovering around 0 C since Monday. The mercury reached as high as 8 C Tuesday in Pangnirtung, another southern Baffin Island community.
