Air passengers heading back and forth from Iqaluit now have a third carrier from which to choose — Air Canada.

The national airline made its first scheduled stop in Iqaluit this weekend as part of its latest northward expansion and its arrival has already resulted in lower ticket prices. Canadian North and First Air also fly out of the Iqaluit Airport.

Brittany MacIsaac was one of about 20 passengers who arrived on Air Canada's 75-seat Bombardier jet on the weekend. She flew from Cape Breton to visit a friend in Iqaluit, and says she booked Air Canada for practical reasons: "Because it came straight through."

Patrick Doyle, who lives and works in Iqaluit, was also among Air Canada's first Iqaluit-bound passengers. He says he picked the airline to bring him home from Ottawa because of the flight's timing.

"I did feel a bit of guilt because I am a strong supporter of other airlines," he said. "Largely I'll remain a client of the other two airlines."

The manager of the Iqaluit International Airport, John Graham, says the ticket counters have been rearranged and the first days of Air Canada flights have been smooth.

"I think there has been quite a bit of excitement around the community since this carrier made the announcement, so it is a significant event in the airport's history."
