A Northwest Territories RCMP officer who was found guilty of pepper-spraying a young man in police custody will find out his sentence on Friday.
Justice Leigh Gower heard sentencing arguments Thursday in Fort Simpson, N.W.T., in the case of Const. Colin Allooloo, who was convicted of assault with a weapon in the September 2006 incident at the Fort Simpson RCMP detachment.
Gower is expected to deliver his sentence Friday morning in Yellowknife.
Allooloo was convicted in September, based largely on the testimony of another RCMP officer who had reported seeing surveillance video that appeared to show Allooloo shooting pepper spray at the man under the door of his holding cell.
The Crown called for jail time for Allooloo, saying the pepper-spraying was a deliberate and senseless act of gratuitous violence against a defenceless person.
Allooloo's lawyers argued that jail time would be too harsh, since it would mean Allooloo would be kicked out of the RCMP.
