Whitehorse doctor gets house arrest for fatal collision

A Whitehorse doctor has been sentenced to one month of house arrest for careless driving in connection with an incident last year in which an Edmonton woman died.
Dr. Vivian Matta, 40, was also fined $1,000 on Thursday, a week after a territorial court judge found her guilty in the death of Becky Shank, 26.
Shank was in Whitehorse for a friend's wedding when she was struck by the SUV Matta was driving while crossing Second Avenue on Aug. 19, 2008.
In sentencing Matta, Judge John Faulkner said Shank's family might feel the sentence is inadequate, but it falls within sentencing guidelines.
Matta will be confined to her house except to go to work at a downtown Whitehorse clinic, the Young Offenders Facility and, if needed, the emergency ward of the Whitehorse General Hospital.
Faulkner also suspended Matta's drivers licence for three months.
