A severed fibre-optic has been repaired, ending telephone, cellular and data transmission problems that hit the Yukon, Northwest Territories and northern British Columbia on Wednesday.
The Bell Canada cable was severed about 9 a.m. MT during roadside work being done in Taylor, B.C., about 15 kilometres south of Fort St. John near the Alberta border, Northwestel spokeswoman Anne Kennedy told CBC News.
Kennedy said the damage disrupted Bell's cellular phone and BlackBerry service as well as Northwestel's Latitude Wireless service.
It also affected data services such as debit and credit card machines. As well, internet speeds were slower than normal.
Customers were unable to make long-distance and toll-free telephone calls earlier in the day, but Kennedy said that problem has been resolved.
Phone services in Nunavut were not affected.
Northwestel customers in the Yukon experienced at least three similar outages in the month of June, two of which were caused by road workers severing fibre-optic cables. The third outage occurred when efforts to fight a forest fire in northern B.C. melted a fibre-optic cable.
