Lightning strikes ignited three new forest fires in the Yukon on Monday.

One fire, located approximately 100 kilometres south of Old Crow, had grown to about 50 hectares by Tuesday. Another forest fire was spotted near Brittania Creek.

Both fires were being allowed to burn because they're not close to communities or buildings.

A third fire started near the McQuesten River lodge. Air tankers and ground crews were sent in to fight the blaze.

The Little Salmon Lake campground remained closed on Tuesday because of a large fire burning in the area.

The Robert Campbell Highway was open on Tuesday but could be closed again depending on the activity of a large fire there.

Last week, Yukon wildfire officials urged paddlers to avoid the Teslin River while firefighters kept watch on a large blaze in the area.

The forest fire, which has been burning in a remote area 60 kilometres northeast of Whitehorse for almost a month, is currently close to 2,000 hectares in size.
