Long-distance phone service was down across the Yukon early Monday morning, after a fibre-optic cable was severed, the second time that happened in a week.

The cable was severed south of Whitehorse along the Alaska Highway, as a result of firefighting efforts in the Smith River area, Northwestel officials said in a release Monday morning.

A company spokesperson told CBC News the cable was damaged during a controlled burn, disrupting both long-distance phone and internet service.

The cable was reported damaged at about 11:15 p.m. PT. Northwestel customers were still able to make local calls.

The cut cable also affected Latitude Wireless and Bell cellphone service in some Northwest Territories and Nunavut communities.

Northwestel officials said most services were restored at about 5:10 a.m., while technicians continue to repair the cable. However, they warn that internet service may be limited for much of Monday.

On Wednesday, phone and data services were down for several hours when a backhoe working near the McLinton River Bridge south of Whitehorse sliced a fibre-optic cable in two.
