A Whitehorse man who won a sizeable chunk of change of Wednesday night's $50-million Lotto 6/49 jackpot says the winnings will recoup all the money he and a friend have spent on lottery tickets over the years.
Lotteries Yukon confirmed Thursday that one ticket was validated Thursday on a secondary prize worth just over $292,000. The ticket had matched five numbers, plus the bonus number.
That winning ticket belonged to Whitehorse cafe owner Brian Beasley. who said he and longtime friend Marshall Mintz have been buying lottery tickets together for decades.
Beaseley told CBC News late Thursday he and Mintz plan to split the $292,000 they won in Wednesday's draw.
"I doubt if we spent quite that much, but we definitely spent some money over the years," Beasley said with a chuckle.
"So, this recoups all that and then some."
Beasley said he initially did not believe Mintz, who called to tell him about the win.
Mintz then put the store clerk on the phone, and the clerk confirmed the ticket matched five numbers plus the bonus number.
Beasley said he and Mintz wasted no time and went directly to the Lotteries Yukon office to confirm their win.
Wednesday's jackpot was worth $49,851,871. The winning numbers were: 4, 22, 26, 29, 39 and 48. The bonus number was 31.
