A Russian news agency has quoted a senior military official as saying that Russian submarines could help claim and protect potential natural resources in the Arctic.
RIA Novosti is quoting Vice-Admiral Oleg Burtsev as saying that submarines of Russia's Northern Fleet could be involved in efforts to stake Russia's claim to the polar region.
Northern nations such as Russia, Canada and the United States are trying to stake claims to parts of the Arctic — which are believed to be rich in oil and gas resources — as part of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
In order to claim areas of the seabed, each nation must gather extensive scientific mapping data on the Arctic sea floor.
In 2007, two Russian civilian mini-submarines descended to the Arctic seabed to collect geologic samples and drop a titanium canister containing the Russian flag.
Officials have said other missions are planned to help support Russia's claim to the region.
